Genetically Improved Stock

In order to further guarantee the rapid development of premium teak, great care has been taken in the selection and planting of genetically improved stock.  Clonal teak was sourced from Brinkman and Associates Reforestation Central America (BARCA). BARCA has applied rigorous selection of around one clonal donor per 15,000 to 20,000 trees in order to achieve maximum productive potential.  These ‘plus trees’ were selected in order to maximize commercial viability, maximizing growth rate, stem straightness, and merchantable height, minimizing branching, and eliminating trunk bifurcation.

Gmelina arborea was planted in response to strong domestic demand and the property was stocked with clones developed by Costa Rica’s National Institute for Forest Investigations and Services (INISEFOR), which has more than 20 years experience in the genetic improvement of forest stock.
